Auberon Claud Hegan Kennard was born in 1870 in London the son of Lt Colonel Edmund Hegan Kennard London Volunteers late 8th Hussars and his wife Agnus Educated at Eton and New College, Oxford he was commissioned into the Rifle Brigade in 1894. Served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa including operations in Natal March to June 1900 including actions at Laing's Nek 6 to 9 June. Operations in the Transvaal east of Pretoria July to 29 November 1900 including the actions at Belfast 26 and 27 August and Lydenberg 5 to 8 September.
Operations in the Transvaal 30 November 1900 to 31 May 1902. Queens Medal and Kings Medal. Served in the First World War in France with the 1/19th London Regiment (St Pancras) as a Major from 9 March 1915, promoted Lt Colonel 1st Battalion London Regiment TF he commanded 69 Group Labour Corps in France . Mentioned in Dispatches London Gazette 30 December 1918 page 15198 (Field Marshall Haig). Member of the London County Council 1913 to 1925 he died in 1951.

 1st Battalion of the Railway Pioneer Regiment. Enlisted in Durban at the age of 26 and discharged on the 31st March 1902 in Johannesburg after serving 229 days.The battalions of the Railway Pioneer Regiment were employed chiefly on the Cape-Pretoria railway, but they were also on the Krugersdorp line, and sometimes operated as a fighting force a considerable distance from railways. The regiment also did admirable service on the armored trains which did so much to make railway traffic possible during the guerrilla stages.
