Edwin Robert Pook was born in Stepney, London and joined the Royal Marines at Walmer on 23 June 1897, aged 20. He sailed for China aboard H.M.S. Centurian and in June 1900 landed with the Naval Brigade. He is confirmed as having participated in the first Pekin Expedition, being present at the capture of Penyand Arsenal and during the operations at Tientsin. Pook was discharged in 1905. He was recalled for the Great War, he served in France with the Royal Garrison Artillery. Special Reserve.
